Black Panther director Ryan Coogler was detained after being mistaken for a bank robber while attempting to withdraw money from his own account, according to US police video footage.
The 35-year-old was briefly detained by police after going
to a Bank of America branch in Atlanta to conduct a transaction on January 7.
Coogler handed the bank teller a slip requesting $12,000 in cash,
with a note written on the back requesting that the money be counted out discreetly, according to Variety.
According to the report, the teller misinterpret the situation as a robbery
because the transaction amount exceeded $10,000 and inform her boss,
triggering an automatic notification in which the police were inform
According to bodycam footage, an officer stated that the call “sounds like someone was attempting to rob the bank.”
The director is seen handcuffed, asking officers what is going on, and then being led out of the bank. When he gets outside, he explains that he did nothing wrong. He was eventually released.
Mr. Coogler told Variety that the situation “shouldn’t have happen,” but that the bank worked with him and that he has move on.
